What a course of NHS treatment costs
England charges by band. From 1 April 2026 band 1 costs £27.90 and covers an examination, X-rays and advice, with a scale and polish when the dentist judges one clinically needed. Band 2 costs £76.60 and adds fillings, root canal work and extractions. Band 3 costs £332.10 and adds crowns, bridges and dentures. One charge covers the whole course of treatment, however many visits it takes, and the highest band in the course sets the price.
Urgent NHS care in England costs £27.90. Wales stopped using bands on 1 April 2026 and now charges by care package, with an urgent package at £37.50.
Who pays nothing
In England you pay no NHS dental charge if you are under 18, under 19 and in full-time education, pregnant, or had a baby in the last 12 months. Pension Credit Guarantee Credit and income-related Employment and Support Allowance also qualify. Universal Credit counts when take-home pay in the last assessment period was £435 or less, or £935 with a child element or limited capability for work. An HC2 certificate gives full help, and an HC3 certificate sets a lower maximum.
Scotland treats everyone under 26 free and gives every resident a free check-up. Adults outside the free groups pay 80% of the cost up to £384 a course in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Welsh care packages share the same £384 ceiling.
Cheaper private care
Private fees sit well above the NHS bands. Across five Bupa Dental Care practices in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, a routine adult check-up costs £75 to £96. Dental schools at Guy's Hospital in London, Birmingham and Dundee treat suitable adults free of charge, with supervised students doing the work in long daytime appointments. Monthly payment plans save money only when the fee is below what the same check-ups and hygiene visits cost one at a time.
Help on the day
If your own dentist cannot see you, NHS 111 arranges urgent care in England. The NHS says you should be offered urgent treatment within 24 hours or 7 days, depending on your symptoms. Facial injuries, heavy bleeding from the mouth and swelling which affects breathing need A&E or 999.

In England: under 18s, under 19s in full-time education, anyone pregnant or with a baby born in the last 12 months, and people on Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, income-related ESA or Universal Credit below the earnings limits. An HC2 certificate also gives free treatment. Scotland adds everyone under 26.
Is private dental care much dearer than the NHS?
Usually. Five Bupa Dental Care practices list a routine adult check-up at £75 to £96, against the £27.90 NHS band 1 charge in England. A private crown starts at £642 to £1,535 across the same practices, against £332.10 for an NHS band 3 course.
Where can I get dental treatment for free without qualifying for NHS exemption?
Several UK dental schools treat adult volunteers free of charge. Students carry out the work under qualified supervision, appointments last up to 3 hours and treatment runs in term time only. Guy's Hospital in London, Birmingham Dental Hospital and Dundee Dental Hospital all state the treatment is free.
