The NHS dose and the upper limit

The NHS advice is 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day. On a label you may see the same amount written as 400 IU, because 1 microgram equals 40 IU. Adults and children over 4 should consider the supplement during autumn and winter, which the NHS puts at October to early March. People who are rarely outdoors, live in a care home or usually cover most of their skin should consider it all year. Children aged 1 to 4 should have 10 micrograms every day of the year.

The upper limit for adults, including pregnant and breastfeeding women, is 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) a day. Children aged 11 to 17 share the same limit. Children aged 1 to 10 should not have more than 50 micrograms a day, and babies under 12 months not more than 25 micrograms. The NHS says some people with medical conditions may need less, so ask your doctor if you have one.

Each figure below was read from the seller's product page. The per dose column is the cost of one tablet or softgel. The last column divides the tablet cost by its vitamin D content, so a 25 microgram tablet and a 10 microgram tablet can be compared on equal terms.

Stock varied on the day. Tesco showed its Vitabiotics pack as out of stock. Savers listed the Vit Store tablets in its vitamin D range, but the product page said they were not available online and offered store collection. Chemist4U showed Valupak in stock.

Multibuy offers on the day

Supermarket offers change the sums. Sainsbury's ran Buy 3 get cheapest 1 free with Nectar on the Vitabiotics 400 IU pack until 23 October 2026. Three packs then cost £8.00 for 288 tablets, or 2.78p each. Asda listed the Vitabiotics 1000 IU pack under Any 3 for 2, so three packs cost £9.90 for 288 tablets, or 3.44p each. Neither offer beats the Valupak price of 2.15p a tablet. Offers end, so check the date on the shelf label or product page before you rely on one.

Multivitamins with a full dose

Two own-brand multivitamins also carry the full 10 microgram dose in each tablet. Tesco A-Z Multivitamin Tablets and Minerals cost £4.95 for 90, and ASDA Wellbeing 1 a day A-Z Multivitamins and Minerals cost £4.95 for 90. Both work out at 5.5p a tablet.

What a year and a winter cost

Pack prices only tell part of the story. The figures below count how many packs cover the period, at one tablet a day.

Chemist4U charges £3.95 for standard delivery on orders under £39. Buying all six Valupak packs in one order brings the year to £11.69. Vitl's subscription has free UK delivery. Even after the delivery charge, the Valupak year costs £53.71 less than the Vitl subscription for the same 25 micrograms a day.

Drops and sprays for children

Liquid and spray forms cost more per dose than tablets. The NHS advises 8.5 to 10 micrograms a day for breastfed babies, and for formula-fed babies drinking less than 500 ml of formula a day.

Free vitamin D

Families on Healthy Start in England, Wales and Northern Ireland collect free vitamins for pregnancy and for children under 4. Both contain vitamin D. In Scotland, NHS inform says free vitamin D is available to all pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and children up to 3. No income test applies in Scotland.

If you want your level tested before buying, the private blood test prices page lists what clinics charge.

Mistakes that cost money

Comparing pack prices instead of the cost per dose. The £5.95 Vitl tin holds 30 softgels. The £4.00 Vitabiotics pack holds 96 tablets.

Ordering one small pack online. A £1.29 pack from Chemist4U becomes £5.24 with the £3.95 delivery charge on orders under £39.

Doubling up without checking labels. A multivitamin such as Tesco A-Z already holds 10 micrograms. A separate vitamin D tablet on top adds to the total, so check both labels against the 100 microgram adult limit.

Paying for vitamins you can get free through Healthy Start or, in Scotland, from your midwife or health visitor.
