How a dental payment plan works
A payment plan is a private arrangement between you and one dental practice. You pay a fixed amount each month, and the practice provides an agreed set of care in return. Denplan collects the payments, but the price is not Denplan's. Its patient page says your fees are set by your dental team, and the practice can review them for changes in your oral health, its business costs, regulation or inflation.
What each Denplan plan includes
| Plan | What the monthly fee covers |
|---|---|
| Denplan Essentials | An agreed number of check-ups and hygiene appointments, routine X-rays and preventive advice, plus a practice discount on other treatment |
| Denplan Care | Everything in Essentials, plus clinically necessary fillings and restorative work such as crowns, bridges, dentures and extractions, but not laboratory fees |
| Denplan Hygiene | Hygiene appointments only, priced on the number you need |
| Denplan for Children | Regular visits for children |
| Denplan Membership | A guaranteed place with your dentist, with any treatment discount at the dentist's choice |
Two optional extras carry published prices. Dental Emergency and Injury Cover costs 60p per person per month and pays towards dental injuries, emergencies and mouth cancer anywhere in the world when you are more than 40 miles from your practice. Implant Upgrade Cover costs £2.25 per person per month and pays up to £20,000 per incident and £3,000 per implant fixture after an injury. Both are insurance provided by Simplyhealth Access.
Published prices
Two practices publishing their plan fees:
| Practice | Plan | Monthly fee | Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood Lane Dentistry, Sonning Common, Reading | Denplan Essentials | £16.07 to £35.80 | £192.84 to £429.60 |
| Wood Lane Dentistry, Sonning Common, Reading | Denplan Care | £21.80 to £65.51 | £261.60 to £786.12 |
| Dental Smiles Takeley | Denplan Essentials | £26.58 | £318.96 |
Dental Smiles Takeley includes 2 examinations, 2 hygiene appointments and 2 sets of X-rays a year, and a one-off £15 registration fee per person may apply. Wood Lane does not say how a patient's fee is set within its ranges. Its FAQ says the dentist assesses your oral health to decide the right plan.
Wood Lane also publishes its pay-as-you-go prices: £59.30 for a routine examination, £83 for a standard hygienist visit, £157 for a small white filling and from £800 for a crown. Essentials patients pay £141.30 for the same filling and £720 for the crown, a 10% discount.
Worked example: check-ups and hygiene only
You see the dentist twice a year and the hygienist twice a year at Wood Lane.
- Pay as you go: 2 x £59.30 + 2 x £83 = £284.60 a year.
- Essentials at the lowest fee: 12 x £16.07 = £192.84. You save £91.76.
- Essentials at the highest fee: 12 x £35.80 = £429.60. You pay £145 more than pay as you go.
The plan comes out ahead only when your monthly fee is £23.71 or less. At £23.72 a month the plan costs £284.64, which is 4p more than paying per visit.
Worked example: add one filling
Same pattern, plus one small white filling in the year.
- Pay as you go: £284.60 + £157 = £441.60.
- Essentials: 12 monthly fees + £141.30.
The break-even monthly fee rises to £25.02. A single small filling moves the line by £1.31 a month, since the 10% discount is worth £15.70 on it.
When paying per visit is cheaper
Pay as you go wins in these cases:
- You can get an NHS dentist. Two band 1 courses in England cost £55.80 a year from 1 April 2026, with a scale and polish included when the dentist judges one clinically necessary.
- You qualify for free NHS treatment. Under 18s, pregnant women, new mothers and people on qualifying benefits pay nothing on the NHS, and a plan only adds cost.
- You need one hygiene visit a year, not two. The Wood Lane pay-as-you-go total falls to £201.60, so Essentials wins only at £16.80 a month or less.
- Your plan fee sits near the top of the practice's range. At Wood Lane, Essentials at £35.80 costs £145 a year more than paying per visit for the same four appointments.
A plan wins when your fee is near the bottom of the range and you use every included visit. Denplan Care can also suit someone expecting fillings or crowns, because the treatment itself is covered and only the lab fee is extra.
Steps before you sign
- Ask for the practice's pay-as-you-go price list and its monthly plan fee for you, in writing.
- Count the check-ups and hygiene visits the plan includes. Dental Smiles Takeley states 2 of each. Wood Lane calls it an agreed number.
- Multiply the monthly fee by 12 and add any registration fee.
- Price the same visits at the pay-as-you-go rate and compare the two totals.
- If you expect treatment, add the plan discount or Care cover to the sum. At Wood Lane the Essentials discount is 10%.
- Decide on the 60p emergency add-on separately. It is optional insurance, not part of the plan fee.
Mistakes that cost money
Comparing the plan with nothing. Ask the practice for its pay-as-you-go list first and add up the visits you would make.
Missing included visits. Each unused check-up or hygiene appointment raises the real cost of the ones you attend. At Dental Smiles Takeley, the £318.96 year works out at £79.74 per appointment if you attend all four.
Forgetting the registration fee and lab fees. The Takeley £15 fee applies in the first year, and Denplan Care excludes laboratory fees on crowns and dentures.
Keeping a plan after getting an NHS place. The finding an NHS dentist guide covers the search. Health cash plans work differently and are compared in the health cash plans guide.
Where the figures come from
Plan contents, fee setting, the 60p and £2.25 add-ons and the £20,000 and £3,000 limits are from Denplan's patient plans page. The Takeley fee, registration fee and inclusions are from the Denplan practice comparison page for Dental Smiles Takeley. The Wood Lane plan ranges are from the practice's Denplan page, and its pay-as-you-go and Essentials prices are from its fees page. The NHS band 1 charge is from NHSBSA knowledge base article KA-02003, and the scaling rule from the NHS website page on understanding NHS dental charges.

Questions people ask
How much is Denplan a month?
Each practice sets its own fee. Wood Lane Dentistry in Sonning Common lists Denplan Essentials at £16.07 to £35.80 a month and Denplan Care at £21.80 to £65.51. Dental Smiles Takeley lists Essentials at £26.58 a month, with a one-off registration fee of £15 per person which may apply.
What is the difference between Denplan Essentials and Denplan Care?
Essentials covers an agreed number of check-ups and hygiene appointments, routine X-rays and preventive advice, with a practice discount on other treatment. Care adds clinically necessary fillings and restorative work such as crowns, bridges, dentures and extractions. Laboratory fees are not included in Care.
Is a dental plan worth it if I can get an NHS dentist?
On cost alone, usually not. Two NHS band 1 courses in England cost £55.80 a year, and a scale and polish is included when clinically needed. The lowest Denplan Essentials fee at Wood Lane Dentistry adds up to £192.84 a year before any treatment.
Does Denplan cover dental emergencies?
Not as standard. Denplan sells optional Dental Emergency and Injury Cover at 60p per person per month. The add-on pays towards dental injuries, emergencies and mouth cancer, worldwide, when you are more than 40 miles from your registered practice.
Can my practice put up the plan fee?
Yes. Denplan says the fees are set by your dental team, and the practice can review them for changes in your oral health, business costs, regulation or inflation. Denplan only collects the payments.
