Hay fever tablet prices: cetirizine, loratadine and fexofenadine

Thirty cetirizine 10 mg tablets cost £2.00 at Asda, 30 loratadine 10 mg cost £2.95 at Tesco and 30 fexofenadine 120 mg cost £6.49 at Chemist4U (GPhC 9012464). Branded packs of 30 cost £11.00 to £12.50 at full price. Fexofenadine 120 mg needs no prescription.

Three ingredients, one a day
Most hay fever tablets sold in UK shops contain one of three antihistamines: cetirizine 10 mg, loratadine 10 mg or fexofenadine 120 mg. The packs are labelled for one tablet a day, so a 30-tablet pack lasts 30 days and the price per tablet tells you the daily cost. Brand names such as Piriteze, Clarityn and Allevia sit on the same shelves as own-brand packs of the same ingredient and strength.
Prices per tablet and per 30 days
Prices were read from retailer websites on 22 October 2026. Superdrug (GPhC 9010126 for its online pharmacy) showed several generic packs as store collection only.

Asda's Clarityn price was a rollback offer, down from £11.25. Chemist4U offers free delivery on orders over £39, so a single pack bought there may carry a delivery charge.
Fexofenadine without a prescription
Fexofenadine 120 mg was prescription-only until the MHRA moved Allevia 120 mg tablets to the general sales list. Its public assessment report, published on 22 December 2020, covers the relief of hay fever symptoms in adults and children aged 12 and over, in packs of 30, at one tablet a day before a meal. General sale status lets shops without a pharmacy sell it, and Tesco and Asda now list own-brand fexofenadine 120 mg beside cetirizine and loratadine.
The 180 mg strength is a different case. In April 2021 the MHRA approved Almerg 180 mg as a pharmacy medicine for chronic hives, known as chronic idiopathic urticaria, in people aged 12 and over. The licence does not cover hay fever.
Online doctors sell fexofenadine after a questionnaire. Superdrug Online Doctor, which dispenses from Superdrug Pharmacy in Northampton (GPhC 9010736), listed 60 tablets of 120 mg at £13.00 and 90 at £19.00, about 21p a tablet. It listed 30 tablets of 180 mg at £18.00, or 60p each. LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor (GPhC 9011437) listed fexofenadine 120 mg from £8.00. For the 120 mg strength these prices are close to the supermarket shelf, with no saving from the extra step.
Hay fever on the NHS
NHS England's guidance on over the counter items lists mild to moderate hay fever, or seasonal rhinitis, among 27 minor conditions suitable for self-care. GPs are asked not to prescribe routinely for it. The guidance names exceptions, such as a minor condition which has not responded to an over the counter product, and says exemption from prescription charges does not on its own justify one.
In England an NHS prescription costs £9.90 an item. Thirty generic cetirizine tablets cost £2.00 at Asda, so the shelf wins by £7.90 a month.
Wales takes a different approach. Hay fever is one of 28 conditions on the Common Ailments Service, which NHS 111 Wales describes as a free NHS consultation with free medication at the pharmacy.
In England, NHS England announced in September 2026 a pharmacy prescribing service for seasonal allergic rhinitis in children, one of five new conditions. It starts from autumn 2026 in a small number of pharmacies.

Steps to pay less
- Read the active ingredient and strength on the pack you use now.
- Find the generic or own-brand pack with the same ingredient and strength.
- Compare the price per tablet, not the pack price. Most shops print it beside the price.
- Buy a multi-pack when the per-tablet price drops, as with Chemist4U's three-pack at 20.0p.
- Add delivery to any online order. Chemist4U delivers free above £39.
- Ask a pharmacist which antihistamine suits you, especially for a child.
Mistakes that cost money
Buying the brand. Piriteze at Tesco costs £9.00 more than Asda's generic cetirizine for the same 30 days.
Buying 10-tablet packs. Superdrug's own fexofenadine 120 mg costs 39.9p a tablet in a pack of 10, against 23.3p in Asda's pack of 30.
Picking up a hives product for hay fever. Allevia Hives 180 mg, 15 tablets for £9.45 at Superdrug, is sold for hives and costs 63p a tablet.
Paying an online doctor for 120 mg fexofenadine, which is sold on supermarket shelves.
Asking an English GP for a prescription. It costs £9.90 and the guidance asks GPs not to prescribe routinely for hay fever.
