The price that matters
A total testosterone test is the first check for suspected testosterone deficiency. Bought privately it costs £19 as a home finger-prick kit from Medichecks or Leger Clinic. Both prices were read on 22 October 2026. The same marker is free on the NHS when a GP decides the test is clinically needed.
Private providers sell three tiers. A single-marker total testosterone test. A hormone profile of five to eight markers. And a full TRT panel of 40 or more markers for men already on treatment. The tiers are priced from £19 to £169, and the collection method adds up to £59 more.

Full TRT monitoring panels
Men already on treatment need repeat tests that cover more than testosterone. Private clinics check liver, kidney, red blood cells and PSA alongside hormones.

Collection fees
The test price often excludes the blood draw. Medichecks charges £35 for a draw at a partner clinic and £59 for a nurse to visit your home. The self-arranged option is free from Medichecks, but you pay whatever the phlebotomy clinic charges. The Men's Health Clinic charges £50 at its Dorset clinic, £45 at a Goodbody clinic, £50 at Inuvi's London centre and £55 for a nurse visit anywhere in the country. A £15 kit is available for a professional of your choice to use.
Medichecks recommends a venous sample over a finger prick for testosterone. Its page says gel or cream on the hands can contaminate a finger-prick sample.
Two morning samples
NHS guidance for GPs in Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire, dated September 2025, states that a diagnosis needs "two morning testosterone levels at least one week apart". The blood is taken between 8am and 10am, fasting, because testosterone peaks between 6am and 8am and is lowest in the evening. NHS Dumfries and Galloway's referral guidance says the initial sample "must be taken 0800 to 0900h" and that "a single low reading is not diagnostic".
Private kits carry the same instruction. Medichecks asks you to take the sample between 6am and 10am. Two tests from the same provider therefore cost at least £38 at £19 each, or £108 with two clinic draws.
What the NHS tests for free
The NHS website says a blood test is arranged when a GP, nurse or specialist thinks you need one, and is usually done at a GP surgery or hospital. There is no charge. The September 2025 NHS guidance tells GPs who suspect testosterone deficiency to arrange a fasting 8am to 10am sample for testosterone, SHBG, albumin, LH, FSH, prolactin, PSA and a full blood count. That set matches what private providers sell for £149 to £169.
The GP decides whether the test is justified. The NHS blood tests page says tests "can check for different things depending on your symptoms". A request without symptoms may be turned down, which is the point at which men turn to private kits.
Steps to keep the cost down
- See your GP first. Describe the symptoms and ask whether a testosterone test is appropriate. If arranged, the test is free.
- If you buy privately, start with a single-marker total testosterone test at £19 rather than a full panel.
- Take the sample between 8am and 10am. A sample taken at the wrong time may need repeating at your own cost.
- Keep both results. A private clinic will ask for two morning readings and a GP will want the same evidence before a referral.
- If a clinic asks for a venous sample, compare the £35 clinic draw against a £15 kit used by a phlebotomist you arrange.
Mistakes that cost money
Buying a full 41-marker panel for a first screen. The expensive panel is for monitoring once treatment has started.
Paying for a home nurse visit when a partner clinic is nearby. The difference at Medichecks is £24 per test.
Taking a finger-prick sample after applying testosterone gel. Medichecks warns the result may read high, and a repeat test costs the full price again.

Where the figures come from
All private prices were read from the provider's own product page on 22 October 2026. The two-sample rule and the 8am to 10am window come from NHS clinical guidance for GPs in England and Scotland. The NHS website pages cited describe who arranges a blood test and where it is done.

Questions people ask
How much is a testosterone blood test in the UK?
Finger-prick kits for total testosterone cost £19 at Medichecks and Leger Clinic on 22 October 2026. Superdrug Online Doctor charges £55. Randox Health charges £46 for a home kit covering eight markers and £48 for a clinic test. Thriva's testosterone profile is £62.10.
Will my GP test my testosterone for free?
Yes, if the GP decides the test is clinically needed. The NHS website says a GP, nurse or specialist arranges the test and tells you how to book. NHS guidance for GPs sets out a morning fasting blood test for testosterone, SHBG, albumin, LH, FSH, prolactin, PSA and full blood count.
Why do I need two testosterone tests?
Testosterone peaks in the early morning and falls through the day. NHS guidance requires two morning samples at least one week apart, taken between 8am and 10am, before a diagnosis. A single low result is not diagnostic.
Is a finger-prick test accurate enough?
Medichecks recommends a venous sample from the arm to reduce the risk of contamination from testosterone gel or cream. A venous draw at a partner clinic costs £35 extra, or £59 for a home nurse visit. Private clinics usually ask for a venous sample before prescribing.
What does a full TRT monitoring panel cost?
Medichecks' Advanced TRT test checks 41 markers for £149 plus £35 for a clinic draw. The Men's Health Clinic's TRT Complete panel is £149 for 43 markers, or £169 for 47. Both cover hormones, PSA, liver, kidney, lipids and blood count.
