The price gap between sildenafil and Viagra
Sildenafil is the medicine. Viagra is a brand of sildenafil sold by Viatris. The NHS erectile dysfunction page names the two together as "sildenafil (Viagra)". Generic and branded tablets come in the same three strengths of 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg.
Five UK online pharmacy pages were read on 22 October 2026. For four 50 mg tablets, the generic cost £3.50 at the cheapest and £13.99 at the dearest. Viagra cost £29.40 to £30.00 for the same pack. Per tablet, you pay 88p to £3.50 for the generic and £7.35 to £7.50 for the brand.
Each pharmacy below supplies both products on a private prescription after an online consultation. Viagra Connect, the 50 mg product sold without a prescription, has its own page: Viagra Connect price.

Strength moves the price by a pound or two for the generic. Zava charges £30.00 for four Viagra tablets at both 25 mg and 50 mg. Which strength you take is set by the prescriber.
What you pay at the checkout
The tablet price is not always the total. Dr Fox adds a prescription fee based on order value: £1.00 up to £10, £2.00 up to £20, £3.00 up to £40 and £4.00 above £40. Delivery by Royal Mail Tracked 24 is £2.90 per consultation. Four generic 50 mg tablets therefore cost £7.40 in all, or £1.85 a tablet. Four Viagra tablets cost £35.30.
Chemist4U includes the consultation and private prescription in its price. Standard delivery is £3.95, free above £39, so four 50 mg tablets come to £8.84. Zava lists free delivery and no consultation fee, so £12.00 is the full cost. LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor offers free standard delivery and charges £4.95 for next day. Chemist Click advertises a free online consultation and does not state a delivery charge on its Viagra page.
Dr Fox also lists a trial pack of two 50 mg generic tablets for £1.00.
Sildenafil on the NHS
The NHS website says "You can get sildenafil on prescription or you can buy it from a pharmacy." The other erectile dysfunction medicines need a prescription. On an NHS prescription you pay the standard charge where you live:
- England: £9.90 per item
- Wales: free for anyone registered with a GP in Wales
- Northern Ireland: free for everyone
The charges by nation guide covers Scotland, and free prescriptions lists who is exempt in England.
In England a small private order can cost less than one NHS item. Four generic tablets from Dr Fox come to £7.40 with fees, £2.50 under the £9.90 charge. Eight come to £13.70, which is £3.80 more. If you pay for several items in a year, compare the prepayment certificate as well.
How much the generic saves
At the same pharmacy, for the same strength and pack:
- Dr Fox, 4 tablets of 50 mg: £29.40 for Viagra against £3.50 for the generic, a saving of £25.90. With fees and delivery the gap is £27.90.
- Dr Fox, 16 tablets of 50 mg: £112.60 against £19.50, a saving of £93.10.
- Dr Fox, 4 tablets of 100 mg: £33.80 against £4.50, a saving of £29.30.
- Zava, 4 tablets of 50 mg: £30.00 against £12.00, a saving of £18.00.
- Zava, 28 tablets of 50 mg: £149.00 against £59.00, a saving of £90.00.
Across pharmacies the spread is wider. The dearest four-pack of generic 50 mg, £13.99, still costs £15.41 less than the cheapest Viagra four-pack at £29.40.
Steps to buy generic sildenafil on a private prescription
- Pick a pharmacy and note its GPhC number from the table. Search the number on the General Pharmaceutical Council register at pharmacyregulation.org.
- Complete the online consultation in full, including every other medicine you take.
- Choose the generic product, at the strength the prescriber approves.
- Compare the checkout total, with prescription fee and delivery, not the tablet price alone.
- Check the per-tablet price of the larger packs before you pay.
Common mistakes that cost money
Asking for Viagra by name. At Dr Fox the brand costs £7.35 a tablet in a four-pack and the generic 88p.
Comparing headline prices without fees. The £3.50 Dr Fox four-pack rises to £7.40 at the checkout, more than double the listed price. Chemist4U's £4.89 pack becomes £8.84.
Buying from an unregistered website. The NHS erectile dysfunction page warns of fake medicines sold online. A UK pharmacy shows its GPhC number, and you can check it on the register.
For the other erectile dysfunction medicine, see tadalafil price. For the wider pattern of generic savings, see generic vs branded prices.
Where the figures come from
Every price was read from the pharmacy's own product page on 22 October 2026. GPhC numbers come from each pharmacy's own website footer or its registration link. The Dr Fox sildenafil page also carries a table of competitor prices dated 18 March 2026, and those figures are not used here. The NHS position comes from the nhs.uk erectile dysfunction page. The prescription charge and the free prescription rules come from nhs.uk, the Welsh Government and nidirect. This guide compares prices only, and The Dose Club supplies no medicines.
