What this page compares
This page compares Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and the Wegovy injection (semaglutide) on price alone, using the GLP Index export of 21 October 2026. It makes no claim about how well either medicine works, how they compare in effect, or which suits any reader. That choice belongs to the prescriber and the patient, and the licence criteria, your medical history and your prescriber's judgement all come before price. The figures here let you see what each would cost once that decision is made.
Both are weekly injection pens. Mounjaro has six strengths from 2.5 mg to 15 mg. Wegovy has six from 0.25 mg to 7.2 mg, with 2.4 mg the maintenance dose in the SmPC and 7.2 mg a higher dose the MHRA approved on 6 January 2026 for adults with a BMI of 30 or more.
Price by dose stage
The two medicines use different milligram scales, so the fair comparison is by step. Each has six strengths. Wegovy's SmPC maintenance dose is the fifth step, 2.4 mg, with 7.2 mg a higher option. Mounjaro's SmPC allows increases up to the sixth step, 15 mg. The cheapest ongoing price and the median ongoing price at each step are below.
| Step | Mounjaro dose | Cheapest ongoing | Median ongoing | Wegovy dose | Cheapest ongoing | Median ongoing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (starting) | 2.5 mg | £105.00 | £153.21 | 0.25 mg | £74.00 | £99.49 |
| 2 | 5 mg | £125.00 | £179.00 | 0.5 mg | £79.95 | £112.95 |
| 3 | 7.5 mg | £175.00 | £236.74 | 1 mg | £79.95 | £119.99 |
| 4 | 10 mg | £203.00 | £259.00 | 1.7 mg | £119.00 | £161.00 |
| 5 | 12.5 mg | £215.00 | £280.00 | 2.4 mg | £139.00 | £202.95 |
| 6 | 15 mg | £234.00 | £299.99 | 7.2 mg | £199.88 | £239.97 |
From starting dose to the top step the cheapest Mounjaro price rises from £105.00 to £234.00. The cheapest Wegovy price rises from £74.00 to £139.00 at the maintenance dose.
Cost over a year
Twelve pens at the top dose and the cheapest ongoing price:
| Medicine and dose | Cheapest ongoing, 12 months | Median ongoing, 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| Mounjaro 15 mg | £2,808.00 | £3,599.88 |
| Wegovy 2.4 mg | £1,668.00 | £2,435.40 |
| Wegovy 7.2 mg | £2,398.56 | £2,879.64 |
A first year rarely sits at the top dose. Following the SmPC minimum of four weeks per step, a first year of Mounjaro is one pen each at 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 mg, then seven at 15 mg. A first year of Wegovy is one pen each at 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 1.7 mg, then eight at 2.4 mg. Both come to less than the 12-month totals above, because the early pens are at cheaper doses.
Your prescriber sets the pace of any dose change and may hold you at a lower dose, which lowers the total. The yearly cost calculator lets you set the dose and months yourself and totals either schedule at the day's prices.
Who pays which price
Private patients in all four UK nations pay these prices. NHS patients pay £9.90 per item in England and nothing in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, whichever medicine is prescribed. Mounjaro reaches NHS patients through a phased GP rollout under NICE TA1026, beginning with adults with a BMI of 40 or more and four of five named conditions. Wegovy reaches them only through specialist weight management services under NICE TA875. The NHS weight loss injections guide has the detail.
Steps to compare for your own case
- Ask your prescriber which medicine and which dose schedule they propose. Price comes after that answer.
- Look up the ongoing price at each dose on the Mounjaro price page or the Wegovy price page.
- Multiply by the months you expect at each dose and add the totals.
- Add the monthly extras your pharmacy charges. The what the price includes guide lists them.
- Compare the two totals. If the difference matters to you, raise it with your prescriber rather than choosing a medicine on price alone.
Mistakes that cost money
Comparing a Mounjaro first order price with a Wegovy ongoing price, or the reverse. Comparing the two medicines at one pharmacy without checking whether that pharmacy is cheap for both: a pharmacy can be cheapest for Wegovy and median for Mounjaro. Reading the monthly gap between the two medicines as fixed, when Mounjaro 15 mg alone ran from £234.00 to £359.95 a month across pharmacies. Signing a 3, 6 or 12 month plan for either medicine: the Dose Club does not advise tie-in plans, because the prices are higher and most of the benefit sits with the pharmacy. Where the figures come from
Every price is from the GLP Index export of 21 October 2026, covering 80 pharmacies for Mounjaro and 72 for Wegovy. Dose steps and the four-week minimum per step are from the Mounjaro and Wegovy Summaries of Product Characteristics on emc. The 7.2 mg approval is from the MHRA press release on GOV.UK. NHS access is from NICE TA1026 and TA875. Yearly totals are arithmetic on the index figures and assume no price change.

Questions people ask
Is Mounjaro or Wegovy cheaper per month?
Compare the two at the same dose step. On 21 October 2026 the cheapest ongoing starting dose was £74.00 for Wegovy against £105.00 for Mounjaro. At the maintenance doses, Wegovy 2.4 mg was £139.00 and Mounjaro 15 mg was £234.00. Cost is one factor among many and the choice of medicine sits with your prescriber.
How much does a year of Mounjaro cost compared with Wegovy?
Twelve months at the top dose and the cheapest ongoing price is £2,808.00 for Mounjaro 15 mg, £1,668.00 for Wegovy 2.4 mg and £2,398.56 for Wegovy 7.2 mg. At the median pharmacy the same year is £3,599.88 for Mounjaro and £2,435.40 for Wegovy 2.4 mg. Few people spend a full year at the top dose, so these are upper figures.
Does the dose schedule change the yearly cost?
Yes. A first year that follows the SmPC minimum of four weeks per step costs less than 12 months at the top dose, because the early months are at cheaper doses. A prescriber who holds you at a lower dose for longer lowers the total further. The pace is their decision, and the yearly cost calculator totals any schedule at the day's prices.
Is the price gap the same at every pharmacy?
No. On 21 October 2026 Mounjaro 15 mg and Wegovy 2.4 mg cost £234.00 and £139.00 at the cheapest pharmacies, against £299.99 and £202.95 at the median. Paying the median for Mounjaro 15 mg instead of the cheapest adds £65.99 a month, so the choice of pharmacy moves the bill as well as the choice of medicine.
Which one can I get on the NHS?
Mounjaro through a phased GP rollout in England under NICE TA1026, starting with adults with a BMI of 40 or more and four of five named conditions.
