What Viagra Connect is and what it costs
Viagra Connect is a 50 mg sildenafil tablet you can buy from a pharmacy with no prescription. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced the change on 28 November 2017, moving the product from a prescription-only medicine (POM) to a pharmacy medicine (P). The MHRA said it is for men over 18 who have erectile dysfunction.
Four UK pharmacies listed prices on 22 October 2026. A four-tablet pack cost £16.00 to £21.99 and an eight-tablet pack £32.00 to £38.99. That puts each tablet at £4.00 to £5.50. Generic sildenafil 50 mg on a private prescription starts at 88p a tablet, so buying without a prescription costs more per tablet.

Well Pharmacy is the trading name of Bestway National Chemists Ltd. Only the eight-tablet Well page was read for this guide.
Per tablet, Dr Fox is £4.00 in both pack sizes. Chemist Click falls from £5.00 in the two-pack to £4.37 in the eight-pack and the 16-pack. Zava's lowest is £4.33 in the 12-pack. Zava's two-pack costs £8.50 a tablet, and its 16-pack, at £5.00 a tablet, costs more per tablet than its 12-pack.
How the pharmacist check works
The MHRA reclassification notice sets out the pharmacist's role. The pharmacist decides whether treatment is appropriate for you. They give advice on erectile dysfunction, how to use the medicine and possible side effects. They also judge whether you need to see a GP.
The notice lists who Viagra Connect will not be sold to. Men with severe cardiovascular disorders are excluded. Men at high cardiovascular risk, men with liver failure or severe kidney failure, and men taking certain medicines that interact with sildenafil must stay under a doctor's supervision.
In a high street pharmacy this happens as a conversation at the counter. Online, each seller runs the check its own way:
- Chemist Click asks you to complete a questionnaire, which a pharmacist assesses. The order ships once its pharmacy team approves it.
- Well Pharmacy asks a few short questions before the sale.
- Zava asks you to fill in a consultation questionnaire, and one of its doctors reviews the request.
- Dr Fox sends every order to one of its doctors, who issues a prescription. A prescription fee applies, even though Viagra Connect does not need one in a pharmacy.
Extra costs at the checkout
Dr Fox charges a prescription fee by order value. A £16.00 order carries a £2.00 fee and a £32.00 order a £3.00 fee. Delivery is £2.90. Four tablets therefore cost £20.90 in total, or £5.23 each, and eight cost £37.90, or £4.74 each.
Zava states free delivery is included. Well Pharmacy delivers erectile dysfunction products free of charge in discreet packaging. Chemist Click lists a free online consultation and gives no delivery charge on its Viagra Connect page.
Viagra Connect against generic sildenafil on prescription
Both products contain sildenafil 50 mg. The generic needs a private prescription, which the online pharmacies below issue after a consultation.
| Pharmacy | Product | Pack | Price | Per tablet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dr Fox | Viagra Connect | 8 tablets | £32.00 | £4.00 |
| Dr Fox | Generic sildenafil 50 mg | 8 tablets | £9.80 | £1.23 |
| Zava | Viagra Connect | 8 tablets | £34.99 | £4.37 |
| Zava | Generic sildenafil 50 mg | 8 tablets | £19.00 | £2.38 |
| Chemist4U (GPhC 9012464) | Generic sildenafil 50 mg | 24 tablets | £22.99 | 96p |
The saving at a single pharmacy:
- Dr Fox, 4 tablets: £16.00 for Viagra Connect against £3.50 for the generic, £12.50 less.
- Dr Fox, 8 tablets: £32.00 against £9.80, £22.20 less.
- Zava, 4 tablets: £21.99 against £12.00, £9.99 less.
- Zava, 8 tablets: £34.99 against £19.00, £15.99 less.
With Dr Fox's fees and delivery added to both, four Viagra Connect tablets cost £20.90 and four generic tablets £7.40. The difference grows to £13.50.
The practical difference is access. No prescriber needs to approve Viagra Connect, so a high street pharmacy can sell it at the counter after a discussion with the pharmacist. The full price comparison with branded Viagra is on the sildenafil vs Viagra price page.
Viagra Connect and the NHS
The NHS erectile dysfunction page says you can get sildenafil on prescription or buy it from a pharmacy. Viagra Connect is the pharmacy purchase, so you pay the shop price in full. A GP prescription for sildenafil costs £9.90 per item in England. Prescriptions are free in Wales for anyone registered with a Welsh GP, and free for everyone in Northern Ireland. The prescription charge guide covers the England charge in detail.
Steps to buy Viagra Connect
- Check the seller's GPhC number, shown in the table, on the General Pharmaceutical Council register.
- Answer the pharmacist's questions in full. Mention heart, liver or kidney conditions and every medicine you take.
- Compare pack sizes on price per tablet. Two-tablet packs cost the most per tablet at Zava.
- Add the fees. A doctor-led online seller may add a prescription fee and delivery.
- If the pharmacist suggests a GP appointment, ask the GP about an NHS prescription for sildenafil.
Mistakes that push the price up
Buying the two-tablet pack by default. At Zava two tablets cost £16.99 and four cost £21.99, so the second pair costs £5.00.
Paying shop prices when you qualify for free NHS prescriptions. In Wales and Northern Ireland an NHS prescription for sildenafil costs nothing.
Assuming every online seller is a pharmacy sale. Dr Fox issues a doctor's prescription and charges a fee for it, which adds £2.00 to £3.00 to a Viagra Connect order.
Where the figures come from
Prices were read from each seller's own product page on 22 October 2026, with the GPhC number taken from the footer or registration badge of the same site. The rules on who can buy Viagra Connect and what the pharmacist checks come from the MHRA notice on GOV.UK. The NHS position and charges come from nhs.uk, the Welsh Government and nidirect. The Dose Club does not sell, prescribe or dispense medicines, and questions about whether a medicine suits you go to a pharmacist or GP.

Questions people ask
How much is Viagra Connect in the UK?
On 22 October 2026 four tablets cost £16.00 at Dr Fox, £19.99 at Chemist Click and £21.99 at Zava. Eight tablets cost £32.00 at Dr Fox, £34.99 at Chemist Click and Zava, and £38.99 at Well Pharmacy. Dr Fox adds a prescription fee and £2.90 delivery.
Do you need a prescription for Viagra Connect?
No. The MHRA moved Viagra Connect from a prescription-only medicine to a pharmacy medicine, announced on 28 November 2017. A pharmacist decides whether to sell it after asking about your health and other medicines. Some online sellers, such as Dr Fox and Zava, have a doctor review the order instead.
Is Viagra Connect cheaper than generic sildenafil?
No. At Dr Fox four Viagra Connect tablets cost £16.00 and four generic sildenafil 50 mg tablets cost £3.50, a difference of £12.50. At Zava the gap on four tablets is £9.99. The generic needs a private prescription, which these pharmacies issue after an online consultation.
Who cannot buy Viagra Connect from a pharmacy?
The MHRA says it will not be sold to men with severe cardiovascular disorders. Men at high cardiovascular risk, with liver failure or severe kidney failure, or taking certain interacting medicines stay under a doctor's care. The pharmacist may advise you to see your GP.
Is Viagra Connect free on the NHS?
Viagra Connect is a pharmacy purchase, so you pay the shop price. Sildenafil itself is available on NHS prescription. The charge is £9.90 per item in England and nothing in Wales for patients of a Welsh GP or in Northern Ireland.
